Virginia City, Nevada – July 2024. Virginia City is located up in the hills about 20 miles southeast of Reno. In 1859 a massive deposit of silver which became known as the Comstock Lode was discovered and soon after Virginia City was established and in the 1870s it was one of the wealthiest and most vibrant cities in the United States. It was a true wild west boomtown with several opera houses, theaters, churches and saloons. By the early 20th century, the ore was mostly mined out and the people left. At it’s peak the population of Virginia City was almost 25,000. Today it is less than 1,000. Virginia City is now a tourist destination with well preserved historical buildings, museums and mining relics.
